Data Collection 2026-2027
Report your content. Compensate an author.
Teaching personnel and education professionals
General information
Your school has been selected this year to help collect data for Copibec. You're in one of the 400 schools that have agreed to keep track of the content they use in class. By taking part, you'll help Copibec ensure that the licensing fees paid by the Quebec education ministry (MEQ) are redistributed to authors and publishers. All the content you report turns into compensation for them!
Participation
Here's how to take part in the data collection process. Create or log into your account on the Copibec platform. Then go to the "Copy log entries" tab and "Create a copy log entry".
When should you report your content? There are three reporting periods:
- Up to November 30: Content used between July 1 and November 30
- Up to March 31: Content used between December 1 and March 31
- Up to June 30: Content used between April 1 and June 30
What you have to report
You're expected to report any content you've photocopied, shared in digital format (via email or on a secure site) or displayed onscreen in class as well as any children's picture books read out in class. All those uses require permission under the Copyright Act. The education ministry has been issued a comprehensive licence from Copibec covering all those uses but you need to report your content so the licensing fees can be paid out to authors.
The content to be reported comprises paper- or digital-format books, magazines and newspapers. In general, this covers any published written works for which you don't already own the reproduction rights.
Important! You don't have to report audio or audiovisual content, material purchased with a prepaid reproduction rights licence or unpublished material. Blogs, images and text available only online also do not have to be tracked.
Why it's important
Did you know Copibec pays out millions of dollars to Quebec authors and publishers every year? The amounts distributed help improve working conditions and ensure that you can discover new content when each school year begins. You have the power to help authors earn a living. All you have to do is let Copibec know which content you use!
